How to choose your program in France? Whether you want to spend a few weeks improving your French in France or commit to a full degree, there is an option for you.
This guide gives you a simple, clear overview of what is available, so you can make an informed decision.
French Language Program in France
French language programs are the most popular choice for international students in France. They are flexible, accessible to all levels, and designed specifically for non-native speakers. Beginner students are accepted and most schools offer new class start dates every Monday throughout the year.
Language programs fall into three main categories based on intensity and student goals:
| Course Type | Hours per Week | Course Length | Best For |
| Semi-intensive | 10 to 15 hours per week | Flexible | Students who do not need a visa and want to balance study with exploring France |
| Intensive | 20+ hours per week | Flexible | Students who need to apply for a visa and want steady, fast progress |
| DUEF | 15 to 20 hours per week | Fixed | Students who need to apply for a visa and want a French university degree |
Specific programs focusing on French exam preparation, academic French for university entry in France, or business French are available. Learn more about your options here.
Short-Stay Language Courses
Short-stay courses typically run from 1 week to 3 months. They are a great option if you want to try living in France, refresh your French, or make fast progress during a holiday or short break. There is no long-term commitment, and you can choose an intensity level that suits your schedule.
Short-stay courses are also a popular first step. Many students come for a few weeks, then decide to return and stay longer after experiencing life in France.
Long-Stay Language Courses
Long-stay courses run from six months to a full year and are designed for students who want deeper immersion and lasting progress. Over a longer period, you move through multiple language levels, build real-world fluency, and have time to truly settle into your new life in France.
Long-stay programs are also an option for students who need a visa-compatible course. All of our partner schools in France offer programs of at least 20 hours per week, which is the minimum required for a long-stay student visa.
| Good to know: Most French language schools accept students of all levels, including complete beginners. On your first day, you will take a short placement test so the school can put you in the right class. No preparation is needed before you arrive. |

Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs in France
France is home to some of France’s most respected universities and Grandes Écoles, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s programs across a wide range of fields. For students who want to earn a French degree while living in France, this is a rewarding and often surprisingly affordable path.
What to Expect
Degree programs in France are taught in French at most public universities, though an increasing number of Master’s programs are offered in English, particularly in business, science, and international relations.
If you are enrolling in a French-taught program, a solid level of French (typically B2 or higher) is required.
The French university system is structured differently from many other countries. Undergraduate programs (Licence) last three years, Master’s programs two years, and both are generally very affordable compared to English-speaking countries because public university fees for international students are regulated by the French government.
Entry Requirements
Requirements vary by institution and program, but you will typically need:
- Academic qualifications: a high school diploma (Baccalauréat or equivalent) for Bachelor’s programs, or an undergraduate degree for Master’s programs
- Language proficiency: proof of French language level (DELF B2 or DALF C1 for French-taught programs) or English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs)
- Application documents: transcripts, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and a CV for most program in France
Application timelines vary, but most programs have deadlines between January and April for a September start. We recommend beginning the process at least six months in advance.
Grandes Écoles
France’s Grandes Écoles are elite higher education institutions specialising in engineering, business, public administration, and the arts. Schools such as HEC Paris, Sciences Po, and IÉSEG School of Management are among the most prestigious in Europe. Admission is highly competitive, but many offer dedicated programs for international students.
