France offers world-class universities and programs for international students.
Find out about the educational and language requirements, the types of programs available, the cost of higher education in France, and other essential information.
What are the educational requirements to enroll in a university in France?
You generally need a qualification equivalent to the French Baccalauréat (high school diploma) from your home country. This is the minimum required to enroll in a bachelor’s program.
For a master’s program, a relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification is required.
What types of university programs are available in France?
French universities offer internationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs in all fields of study.
They typically follow the LMD system:
- Licence: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in 3 years
- Master: Equivalent to a Master’s degree in 2 years
- Doctorat: Equivalent to a PhD in 3–4 years
Some universities may also offer a Diplôme Universitaire in 1 year. It is a university-specific diploma that offers specialized training in a particular field.
For example, our partner ILCF Paris offers a Diplôme Universitaire specifically focused on French language studies. Learn more.
When do university programs in France start?
In France, the academic year typically begins in September or October, depending on the institution and program. Summer holidays usually start in May or June, and generally last for at least 2 months.
How to apply and how far in advance should I apply?
Most universities close applications by May or June, but applying early gives you time to complete interviews, tests, and any required paperwork. We recommend applying between January and March for programs starting in the fall.
To apply, contact us directly. Our team will guide you through the school selection, application paperwork and process. Depending on your nationality and course length, you may need a student visa.
What language are the university programs taught in?
Programs are generally taught in French or English.
You’ll need to show proof of your French or English level, depending on the language of instruction. DELF B2 or DALF C1 is commonly required for French programs, and tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or TOEIC for English-taught courses.
What is the cost of education in France for international students?
Thanks to government support, tuition fees in public universities are relatively low:
- Around €2,850 per year for bachelor’s degrees
- Around €3,879 per year for master’s degrees
Private institutions, such as business schools, typically charge between €6,000 and €18,000 per year.

Are French diplomas recognized internationally?
Yes. French diplomas are internationally recognized and highly valued by employers and institutions.
Studying in France provides language skills and international experience, opening doors to careers in multinational companies such as L’Oréal, Renault, Airbus, and other global brands.
For those planning to live in France long-term, obtaining a diploma from a French university can make you eligible for a job-seeker visa to search for employment after graduation, or a business-creator visa to start your own business in the country.
