- You get free access to French health insurance, which covers about 60% of your medical costs.
- You can apply for VISALE, which can serve as your guarantor if you need one to sign a lease.
- If you are from the EU, EEA, Switzerland, or you have a scholarship, you might qualify for a housing allowance.

- You also get access to student discounts on many products and services in France.

Visa length and renewal
This visa allows you to live, study, and work in France for 1 year. and can be extended if you continue your studies.
The renewal conditions are the same as for your initial application. As long as you are enrolled in an accredited program at a French institution of higher education and can provide proof of sufficient financial resources, you remain eligible. As a reminder, the minimum financial requirement is €615 per month.
Part-time work allowed
One of the standout benefits of the French student visa is that it automatically grants you the right to work part-time, up to 964 hours per year (approximately 20 hours per week).
This not only helps you supplement your finances but also gives you the opportunity to practice your French, build your local network, and potentially open doors to future professional opportunities after graduation.
As of January 2026, the minimum wage in France is €12.02 per hour before taxes. After about 20% tax, you take home around €9.52 per hour. For example, if you work 10 hours a week at minimum wage, you’ll earn about €380 net per month.
Free healthcare
France offers one of the most comprehensive healthcare systems in the world. As a student visa holder, you’ll have free access to public healthcare, funded by contributions from employers and employees across France.
Most of your medical expenses will be covered, around 60%, giving you peace of mind during your studies.
Housing allowance
Along with French health insurance, you might also qualify for a housing allowance from the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF).
Since July 2026, only students from EU/EEA/Switzerland, or those with a scholarship, can receive housing allowance from the French government. The amount varies depending on your income, the size and location of your accommodation, and other personal factors. On average, the housing allowance ranges from €100 to €300 per month.
Access to VISALE
With your student visa, you can apply for VISALE, a free service from the French government that helps people find housing.
VISALE acts as a guarantee for your rent and utility bills if you can’t pay. So, if you ever have trouble paying your rent, VISALE will cover it, which reassures both you and your landlord.
