What is the DUEF?
The Diplôme Universitaire d’Études Françaises (DUEF) is a university-level qualification focused on the French language and francophone culture.
It is issued by recognized French universities and designed for non-native speakers who wish to develop their French skills for academic or professional purposes. Language schools do not offer DUEF programs, as they must have university status.
Similar to the DELF/DALF exams, the DUEF follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You can earn diplomas at different levels: DUEF A1, DUEF A2, DUEF B1, DUEF B2, and beyond.

How long does it take to earn a DUEF?
At Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises (ILCF), DUEF programs are offered in 6-month or 1-year formats.
Please note that B2 level is widely considered the minimum level required for university admission, entry into selective schools, or working for a French company.
Your progression at ILCF towards B2 level will be as follows:
- A1 – Beginner: 6 months
- A2 – Elementary: 6 months
- B1.1 & B1.2 – Intermediate: 12 months
- B2.1 & B2.2 – Advanced: 12 months
Your progress is evaluated through continuous assessment and a final exam covering your oral and written skills. The combined results determine whether you advance to the next level or repeat the current one.
