After Candlemas at the beginning of February, Mardi Gras comes just a few days later. With its lively parades and colorful costumes, Mardi Gras is a special event you won’t want to miss.
What is Mardi Gras?
Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, began in medieval times. It combines both Pagan and Christian traditions.
At first, Mardi Gras was a Roman pagan festival that celebrated the end of winter. Later, it became a Christian tradition marking the start of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and prayer remembering Christ’s time in the desert. The name comes from the tradition of eating rich or ‘fat’ foods before Lent begins.
Today, Mardi Gras is famous for its parades and fancy costumes. It marks the climax of the carnival season.

Where to celebrate Mardi Gras in France?
- Nice: The Nice Carnival is the largest in France and ranks among the world’s most famous, along with Rio and Venice. Its special “Battle of Flowers” sees thousands of flowers thrown into the crowd, turning the city into a colorful, fragrant celebration. It’s truly magical!
- Dunkerque: The Dunkerque Carnival is known for lively parades where locals dress as fishermen and sing traditional songs.
- Limoux: In southern France, Limoux holds one of the country’s longest Carnivals. The celebration lasts for weeks and features masked balls and parades through the town.
- Annecy: Annecy is known for its Venetian Carnival, where masked figures stroll through the beautiful old town, adding a bit of Italian charm.
How to celebrate Mardi Gras like a local?
To celebrate Mardi Gras like a local, join in by wearing a colorful costume. You might choose a classic harlequin outfit or make your own. Many shops rent costumes at good prices, so it’s easy to take part. For makeup ideas, try being creative or check out YouTube tutorials for help.
Mardi Gras is also a great time to enjoy delicious food. Outdoor stalls sell crepes, doughnuts, waffles, and other sweets. Just like in the past, it’s the perfect excuse to have a final ‘fat’ meal and try some tasty street food.
