Learning French but don’t know which resources to rely on? In this guide, we have curated the best study resources for learning French.
Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced student, you can study using these high-quality, reliable resources.
Textbooks and manuals
If you’re looking for a French textbook, then you want to look for these two series which are widely used in French language schools and universities in France:
Édito
A structured textbook widely used in French language schools, available for all levels from A1 to C2. It combines authentic written, audio, and video materials with guided grammar lessons and integrated phonetics to help learners understand the language and perfect their pronunciation.
Défi
An original and motivating French textbook designed for all levels. Rooted in an action-oriented approach, it integrates culture and real-life content to make language learning meaningful. Each unit combines grammar and vocabulary around different activities, with reading strategies and practical exercises that build comprehension and autonomy.

Graded readers and children’s books
While textbooks are essential to learn the grammar and build your vocabulary, a really effective method to consolidate your learning is to read in French. Reading develops language intuition and exposes you to authentic French expressions.
Start reading in French with graded readers and children’s books:
- LFF (Lire en français facile): This graded readers collection, published by Hachette, is organized into four levels from A1 to B2. It offers both contemporary fiction and classic French literature, accessible to beginners. Difficult words and expressions are defined at the bottom of each page. Many titles also include an audio CD to help you practice your pronunciation and listening skills.
- Le Petit Nicolas: A children’s book series well known in France and used by many French parents to slowly introduce their kids to reading in French. It is an ideal series for beginners as it uses simple language and humorous stories that capture everyday life in France.
Once you feel confident, you can start looking into more complex readings: books you’ve read in your native language, easy French news, newspapers, and more.
Language apps
For those who want to learn and practice French on the go with fun, Duolingo is always a good option. Its bite-sized lessons are ideal to study French while you are waiting in line or taking transportation, but it is more a support solution and we do not recommend relying solely on this type of app.
An effective method that has been studied by the scientific community and proven to be really effective is Anki. It is a flashcard app that uses spaced repetition to help you memorize.
We recommend you create your own deck of cards rather than downloading someone else’s deck. Create unique cards using the different resources we mention in this article and go over your deck of cards when you have small pockets of time. If you make this a habit, it will help you memorize and consolidate vocabulary, grammar, and French expressions.
Websites and podcasts
Learn French with authentic content:
- Le Français Facile avec RFI: Radio France Internationale (RFI) is the state-owned international radio news network of France. Their website features podcasts and exercises for all levels, allowing you to practice French while following international news. It’s an excellent way to develop listening skills and understand spoken French in real-life contexts.
- TV5MONDE – Apprendre le français: TV5Monde is a French public television network. Their free and interactive website offers French lessons based on French TV programs. It is a great resource to help you improve your comprehension of both the French language and culture.
